Meet Liz our Cake Artist

Liz is The Wow Factor’s resident Cake Artist!

Liz took choir for one day in high school…dropped the class and signed up for an art class instead. She took art the rest of the four years and knew she was headed to art school for college. Liz graduated from college in Michigan with a major in drawing.

When Liz’s boyfriend got a job in Charlotte she was determined to find a job doing something creative. Though not a baker by trade, her grandfather was a baker and thought it might just be in her blood, so she applied.  Liz can bake!  It turns out she can also sculpt cakes, which is pretty lucky.  Now she sits down with clients who have an idea for a cake, but haven’t quite got the vision. She can sketch something up for them that’s completely unique and pulls from their interests and lives.  Liz loves to see to see the 2-d become 3-d!

Couch Burning in Charlotte

Couch Burning has long been a tradition to West Virginia University. The students burn couches because the basketball team won. They burn couches when the football team wins. They burn couches when the football team loses. They burn couches when it snows. WVU students burn couches. It’s what they do.

We were approached to do a unique cake for a WVU alumni who was celebrating his sixtieth birthday. We were given an example of the typical couches that get burned and we used that as our model. With 60 candles on the cake, we were pretty sure our “Couch Cake” would burn too.

Wow Factor Cakes Makes A Coldplay Cake

We just enjoyed an awesome concert by Coldplay last night. We were asked by TimeWarner Arena to create a cake for Coldplay and their hardworking crew. Coldplay was showcasing their lastest album Mylo Xyloto.  The album cover had a graffiti look, so we decided to incorporate that into the cake. As the concert began, we saw that the set was also decorated with the grafitti and we knew we made the right choice. We hope they enjoyed the chocolate cake with hazelnut mousse as much as we enjoyed their music.

A Little Birdie-Revealed

Gender Reveal parties are becoming more and more popular as another reason for friends and family to gather and celebrate whether they are having a boy or a girl.  We were privileged to help our photography friend, Rachel Fesko of Rachel Fesko Photography, who found herself on the other side of the lens with her party. Rachel wanted to have the cutting of the cake be the revelation of the gender with obviously Blue for “Boy” and Purple for a “Girl” We were inspired by her invitation and designed the cake and then we waited for the doctor to provide the gender (after being sworn to secrecy). Check out the results and the proud daddy by great pictures taken by Sunny Hutchinson of Themba Imagery.

Absolute Love

Here is a video made for one our couples,  Natalie & Sean’s wedding. It was filmed by Jamie at Absolute Wedding Films  at the beautiful Charlotte City Club. We absolutely loved the trailer as Jamie did a phenomenal job catching the essence of their relationship. Unfortunately, the picture of our wedding cake hit the cutting room floor, but we love it anyway. What do you think about it?

Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head

The delivery went off without a hitch - no missing ears, nose, eyes, or mustaches!

And we now pronounce you husband and wife… congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head!

Well, as you probably guessed, no – the couples’ name is not Potato Head, and actually has nothing to do with potatoes. But it’s a cute story anyway!

The groom’s sister presented her brother with a groom’s cake during the wedding ceremony (at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden!) as her gift to the newlyweds. She wanted the cake to incorporate his tattoo, which represents his German/American heritage, accounting for his favorite American sports team, and his favorite German sports team.

So that’s exaclty what Wow Factor Cakes did. Who knew potatoes could be so sweet?

A Sweet Faux Pas

Even the French fashion designer, Gabrielle “Coco” Bonheur Chanel would have been proud!

Bentley’s on 27 is an uptown Charlotte fine dining experience, or rather, it is “a visionary dining experience.”

Exquisite American and French cuisine… magnificent, panoramic skyline views… impeccable service…

And the perfect accessory to accompany an evening of Jimmy Choos, diamond earrings, Cartier watches, and Dom Perignon? Why, the perfect purse, of course.

The Wow Factor Cakes was so excited to be a part of this special night! We got to create a Chanel purse cake for the wife of a very sweet husband. For their anniversary, he presented his bride with a real Chanel purse after they enjoyed the look-alike.

Who knows what might be next… a glass slipper, perhaps?

May the Force Be With You

... PIERCE, I AM YOUR FATHER ...

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… there was a little boy destined for greatness. A little boy who would hold rule over a household for an afternoon. A little boy who would reign during his fourth birthday.

OK, OK – you get the idea!

Earlier this month, we got to have a lot of fun creating a Darth Vader cake for four-year old Pierce Pope. He got to dress up as Darth Vader while his friends dressed up as storm troopers. Pierce’s costume even came complete with a lightsaber!

Chanda Pope is Pierce’s mother, and also a photographer – she snapped some great pictures of our cake! To view her photography, visit www.photographybychanda.com.
